BANKSIDE ARTS [a sensory development]

This project aims to kick-start placemaking in an area that has has been long deprived of a collective goal. The site sits today as a 'pass-thru' but has huge potential for a constructed natural soundscape; with the help of a community arts center the residents will come to see the beautiful potential of their community and continue to independently spread this concept. This project is the start.

  • A diagram depicting Form Development, showing the overall process through the project. It is located in the core of a crime-ridden community and centers around a flood drain with very high sensory-potential.
  • A diagram depicting Drain Development - The aim is to boost the sensory and social impact of the flood drain. Offsetting the planes of the ground & terraces diversifies the site flow and allows natural sounds to migrate.
  • A diagram depicting Community Hub Plan - The planes of the symbolic shear walls are skewed to break away from the conforming grid of the community. They provide leading lines towards the rich new soundscape of the drain.
  • A diagram depicting Bankside Arts - G Floor - aforementioned.1st floor - A liberating space that interacts with the natural soundscape of the drain. 2nd Floor - An oppressive space interacting with the west urbanscape.

Graduated in 2020

Hello, I'm James. While studying in Poland I came to realise that architecture is so much more than creating spaces. It was described to me as "frozen music"; this project is my response to that.
