Power in Place. Paintings of Scotland’s Seas & Coasts

Charismatic Jon Schueler (1916 – 1992), born in Milwaukee, with Swiss/German antecedents, lived for years at Mallaig on the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands. An important member of the NYC Abstract Expressionists in the 1950s, the intriguing question, as his friend and fellow artist Ken Dingwall posed, is ‘what the devil was Jon doing in Scotland?’ I went to Mallaig to find out.

  • American, Jon Schueler, settled in Mallaig to paint. Why? I went to find out – follow the link. https://paintings-of-scottish-seas.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2021/11/08/a-visit-to-jon-schuelers-mallaig/
  • This is Jon Schueler in 1970. The painting is from his first Mallaig residency in 1957.
  • A deep map reveals more about the place than just the flat geography.
  • This is a palette analysis of all their paintings that Schueler painted during his isolation at Mallaig Vaig in the wild winter of 1957/58.
