Waste Water Recyling Plant, Favela Rocinha, Rio De Janeiro

The project is an amalgamation of Contextual, Social and Infrastructural Studies establishing a conceptual model capable of being applied to any favela site. This model combines a deconstructed waste water recycling facility with social facilities to provide deprived regions of favela Rocinha with contextually integrated sanitation infrastructure, pure drinking water and spaces for socialisation.

  • The proposal contextually integrates into the surrounding favela by respecting the existing fluid urban fabric and the chaotic treatment of materiality.
  • The development is deconstructed throughout the site to ensure the small scale repetitive architectural language of the favela is maintained.
  • The reimagining of the existing alleyways within the favela creates an architectural conversation between light, infrastructure and materiality.
  • The development absorbs construction methods found within the favela to create a larger massing made up of smaller fractoral units.
